Compared Himself to Nelson Mandela?

 Former President Donald Trump has compared himself to Nelson Mandela, a political prisoner who became the first president of a post-apartheid South Africa, while expressing his willingness to go to jail for violating a gag order in his New York hush money trial. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, "If this Partisan Hack wants to put me in the 'clink' for speaking the open and obvious TRUTH, I will gladly become a Modern Day Nelson Mandela - It will be my GREAT HONOR." He further stated, "We have to Save our Country from these Political Operatives masquerading as Prosecutors and Judges, and I am willing to sacrifice my Freedom for that worthy cause."

Trump's comments have sparked ridicule across social media, with some users comparing his self-centeredness to Mandela's struggle against institutionalized racial segregation. Others have pointed out the stark contrast between Mandela's 27-year imprisonment for fighting against apartheid and Trump's attempts to evade a gag order for discussing hush money payments to an adult film star.

The gag order in question was imposed by Judge Juan Merchan, who is presiding over Trump's hush money trial, which is set to begin on April 15. The order restricts Trump from making public statements about the case, including comments about Merchan and his family. Trump has been fined before for violating a judge's gag order in a civil business-fraud lawsuit in New York.

Trump's comparison of himself to Mandela is not the first time he has done so. In October 2023, Trump told a crowd of supporters in New Hampshire that he wouldn't "mind being Nelson Mandela" and that he was a victim of political persecution. The Biden campaign criticized Trump for the comparison, stating that it was "so self-centered" and that Trump was "comparing himself to Jesus Christ and Nelson Mandela all within the span of little that's Donald Trump for you."
